Mormonism and Margaret Barker - Part 6

In my five previous posts under the label, "Margaret Barker", I have referenced a number of Barker's interpretations of the Bible that directly conflict with promulgated Mormon doctrine. In this sixth installment of the series, I bring to the attention of AF readers a thread from a website that I discovered earlier today:

The above contribution is an excellent supplement to the third installment of this series, and brings back to mind the somewhat odd obsession that many Latter-day Saints have with Margaret Barker.

  2. Hi Rory,

I read your comment late last night, and was going to comment on it this morning, but alas, it is now gone... ???

  3. Dave,

I am sorry but I got up for work today thinking it had some flaws including an unnecessarily combative tone.

I didn't read her article. I just took off with the idea that Jesus was transformed into God after the Incarnation, and not God before He was baptized. This could not be a "god" that I am willing to worship, especially when I consider that you and I all of our neighbors have the potential to be "transformed" into God.

But I still haven't read the article and I don't know if I will have time. As you know, we are trying to get ready to move. Anyway, Before I blow a gasket about Jesus being "transformed", maybe I should ask to you to explain what I am misunderstanding in Barker's thought.

    Thanks,

    Rory

  4. Hello again Rory,

I don't think you are "misunderstanding...Barker's thought" at all. I have found so much of her material to be, in a very real sense, anti-Christian in nature; much closer to Gnosticism than historic Christianity.

As for the Mormon connection, it is more than a bit interesting that a number of Mormon folk ignore so much of her teachings that stand in stark contrast to historic Mormon thought in order to embrace the few that are more favorable to their paradigm.

Anyway, to make a long story short, I see no need for you to be concerned about Barker...
